Abstract
İşkence, Orta Çağ'da toplumsal olaylar arasında en acı veren olaylardan biriydi. Nitekim Orta Çağ Engizisyonuna kadar da yaygın bir uygulama değildi. Orta Çağ’da işkence çoğu zaman fiziksel ızdırap uyandırır ancak psikolojik işkencenin eşit düzeyde acıya yol açabileceğini vurgulamak önemlidir. İşkence eylemlerinin çoğu gizli yer altı zindanlarında ve cezaevlerinde Engizisyonun emirlerini yerine getiren cellatlar tarafından yapılmıştır.
İşkence önceleri sivil makamlarca uygulanmış; daha sonra Engizisyon, IV. Urban'ın talimatıyla konuyu ele almıştır. Çünkü sapkınlıktan şüphelenilenlere işkence yapılması IV. Innocent tarafından onanmıştır (1252). Zamanla, Engizisyon sadece sapkınları takip etmedi, tüm inançları da kontrol etmeye çalıştı. Bu nedenle cadılar, Tapınak Şövalyeleri, Yahudiler, Müslümanlar gibi birçok toplumsal grup Engizisyon tarafından işkenceye maruz bırakılmıştır. Bu makale, 14-16. yüzyılda Batı Avrupa'da Engizisyon ve işkencenin nasıl geliştiğini araştırmaktadır. Makalemizde Engizisyonun işkenceyi toplumu kontrol etmek için bir argüman olarak kullandığı vurgulanmaktadır.

Abstract
Torture was one of the most painful events among social occurence in the Middle Ages. As a matter of fact, it was not common practice until the Medieval Inquisition. Most of the time in middle ages, torture evokes physical suffering but it is important to stress that psychological torture can inflict equal levels of pain. Most torture acts were performed by the executioners who carried out the orders of the Inquisition in secret underground dungeons and prisons. The torture was at the beginning applied by the civil authorities, the Inquisition subsequently took the matter into its own hands, under direction of Urban IV. Because The torture of those suspected of heresy was upheld by Innocent IV. (1252). Over time, the Inquisition sought to not only to pursue heretics but to control all belief. For this reason, many social groups such as Witches, Knight Templar, Jews, Muslims were subjected to torture by the Inquisition. This article explores how the inquisition and torture developed in Western Europe in the 14th-16th century.
It is emphasized in our article that the Inquisition used torture as an argument to control society.
